It was from here that his love for fashion and costume design started growing. Since childhood, he was very fond of films. He used to watch almost every film. But Manish was more focused on the clothes of the artists. He could not take a degree in designing. In the 1980s, people used to make fun of him for fashion designing, because at that time there were no fashion designing courses for men. At the beginning of his career, he worked at Equinox Boutique in Mumbai for just Rs 500 a month. Here he got the job of showing clothes to customers and folding them. In his free time, Manish used to secretly make design sketches. In the early years of Bollywood, producers would reject his designs as too glamorous. On the set they were told that you are going to stitch the clothes, give them to them and move on.
