Senior filmmaker and writer Mahesh Bhatt talked about many untouched aspects of life in the program ‘In Search of Truth’ organized in Mumbai. In this conversation with scriptwriter and director Suhrita Das at RDX Studio, Versova, he openly discussed his childhood, career struggles and relationships. Mahesh Bhatt said that people often postpone their life for the future, but the truth is that life is in this moment and this breath. Apart from film production, ideas on mental health and child rearing were also shared in this programme. Bhatt had learned the lesson of starting from zero from Raj Khosla while remembering his initial struggles and mentioned one thing about director Raj Khosla. He said that Raj Khosla had told him, “Starting from zero is a great figure.” According to Mahesh Bhatt, there is nothing to be afraid of starting from zero, rather one should be proud of it because every big journey starts from here. He told that at the age of just four, he was first attracted towards cinema and since then the desire to tell stories arose within him. Fireflies were decorated in the hair of his ailing mother. During the conversation, Mahesh Bhatt became emotional remembering his mother. Narrating an anecdote from his childhood, he said that once his mother was very ill. To make her laugh, he had decorated fireflies in his mother’s hair. He said that art and the best stories often come from such simple and human moments in life. Bhatt admits that much of his creativity and films are the result of his personal struggles, failures and heartbreaks. Earlier wanted to stand out, now want to connect with people. Talking about the rebellious nature of his childhood, Mahesh Bhatt said that there was a time when he always wanted to stand out from the crowd. But with age and experience he understood that the real development of a human being does not lie in being separated from others, but in connecting with people and sharing life. Regarding success, he said that we think that the next success will give us happiness, but satisfaction comes from living in the present moment. A question-and-answer session was held in the last part of the program on child rearing and advice given to youth. The students, theater artists and writers who came there asked many questions to Mahesh Bhatt. Answering on parenting, Bhatt said that children learn not from the teachings of their parents, but by observing their behavior. Therefore, parents should listen carefully to their children instead of just giving them instructions. Giving a message to the youth, he said that there is no need to be afraid of failure, because the biggest learning often comes from defeat.
