Known for making unconventional films, Anurag’s life itself is like a cinematic script. Born on 10 September 1972 in Gorakhpur, Anurag wanted to become a scientist. He took admission in Delhi’s Hansraj College to study Zoology, but while staying in the hostel here, he became obsessed with theater and films. This passion changed his path.
Struggle – Slept on the streets, suffered heart attack twice due to depression
When 21 year old Anurag reached Mumbai with the dream of film production, he had only Rs 5,000 in his pocket. For months they slept on street benches and ate in hostels. To join films, he worked as a waiter in Prithvi Theatre. In 1995, he wrote the story of the films Auto Narayan and Jayate, but both were not released. Even in film production, his first film ‘Paanch’ was not released due to the objection of the Censor Board, while Black Friday also got stuck for three years. During the Corona period, Kashyap was making a film based on Suketu Mehta’s book Maximum City, but in between, Netflix canceled the project. Due to this, he had to face serious financial crisis. Due to depression, he even suffered heart attacks twice.
Success – Got a break in Satya, hit with Gangs of Wasseypur
Kashyap got his first big break in 1998 as a co-writer in Ram Gopal Varma’s “Satya”. The year 2009 was the turning point as a director, when his “Dev D” became a box office hit and “Gulaal” received critical praise. This strengthened his identity as a director making unconventional films. In 2012, the huge success of “Gangs of Wasseypur” made Anurag one of the stars of Bollywood. Established in the line of famous producer-directors. Anurag has produced and directed about 120 films including great films like “Queen”, “Lunch Box”, “Udaan”, “Super 30”. He has also acted in 46 films.
He has received many awards including Filmfare and IIFA. The French government has awarded him its highest cultural honour.
