The Supreme Court on Tuesday imposed a fine of Rs 3 lakh on stand-up comedian and YouTuber Samay Raina, Ranveer Allahabadia, Vipul Goyal, Balraj Paramjit Singh Ghai, Sonali Thakkar, Nishant Jagdish Tanwar.
The court has given this order in the case of controversial remarks on disabled people. It was heard by the bench of CJI Surya Kant, Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana. The bench said that despite our order, Raina did not invite any disabled person on his show.
The court said-
We feel that Raina misled the court and blatantly violated our orders. We impose a fine on them, which has to be deposited within 2 weeks.

The court was hearing a plea by Cure SMA India Foundation, which has accused Raina’s show of making insensitive comments on the cost of treatment of spinal muscular atrophy and making fun of the disabled.
Senior advocate Aparajita Singh, appearing for the organization, said that Raina never approached them or any other disabled person to participate in any of his shows. After this the court imposed fine.

Allegation of violation of dignity of disabled, court’s instructions
- The petition demands making rules on the broadcast of online content that violates the right to life and dignity of the disabled. The petition was filed in November 2025.
- In 2025, the court had directed Raina and other standup comedians to perform two shows every month to raise funds for the treatment of the disabled.
- It was also said that the disabled should also be persuaded to participate in the show.
Arguments of petitioner and Raina
Raina’s lawyer said that we have raised a fund of Rs 9 lakh through the show. The disabled were called. His photo was also on show. It is unfortunate if we could not reach the client of Aparajita, the lawyer of the disabled organization.
Aparajita Singh, lawyer of the disabled organization, said – We do not want money from them. This is arrogance and we will not bow before it. On this the lawyer of the time said that this is not arrogance.
Supreme Court said – gave freedom so that we can improve
CJI said if this is not arrogance then we will have to check Oxford dictionary. We gave them freedom for a long time. We thought that these were boys from a good family and that they would improve, but nothing happened. We impose a fine and if it is not paid, we will increase it to Rs 30 lakh.
Controversy started with Ranveer’s comment in 2025
In February 2025, Ranveer arrived as a guest judge in Allahabadia Samay Raina’s show ‘India’s Got Latent’. He asked a contestant a very objectionable question related to the sexual relations of parents. After this clip went viral, massive protests started across the country.
After this, FIRs were registered in many states including Maharashtra and Assam. The names of Samay Raina, Ranveer Allahabadia and other panelists were included in the complaints. Allegations were made that obscene and indecent material was served in the show.
The Supreme Court had said – Freedom of expression is not unlimited. Decency and social responsibility are also necessary on the public platform. Some young people consider themselves “very oversmart”.
