‘XG’ band became the identity of global pop: Left home at the age of 12; 7 girls created history by practicing till midnight on an empty stomach

Amidst the dominance of South Korean band BTS, Blackpink in the world of music and dance and the global popularity of groups like Stray Kids, Seventeen, the magic of Japan’s 7 girl band XG (Extraordinary Genius) is at its peak. The next performance of XG’s journey to becoming a star in the world of pop music is a unique example of patience, unmatched discipline and indomitable mental strength. 21 selected among thousands of girls audition in 2016 Thousands of girls across Japan auditioned for XG in 2016. Out of these, 21 were selected for training. Everyone lived together in a dormitory. Music and dance were practiced from morning till night. Training was also given to speak in many languages. The discipline here was quite strict. She couldn’t even share photos on social media. Once a girl uploaded the picture on social media, she was severely reprimanded. Ultimately 7 were selected for the band. Fight for survival Group member Maya describes training as ‘a fight against oneself’ both physically and mentally. While Chisa called this training a pure struggle for survival. During the six years of training, mutual understanding among the girls of XG improved. Chisa says, in a good way, we pushed each other to be better. Due to this the team became more organized. Hinata explains that every member has their own style. Still they move together. Memories – Blood-stained shoes and leader Jurin’s panic attack When the group’s main rapper Kokona was 12 years old, her toenails broke after doing the same step 500 times a day. Many times the soles started bleeding. When she screamed in pain, instead of showing pity, the trainers used to say, ‘If you are giving up due to pain, then forget the dream of the stage.’ Kokona would wrap tape around her feet and start dancing again. The leader of the group, Jurin, once had a severe panic attack on the floor after 18 hours of continuous practice and started gasping for breath. With this hard work, XG has created a new history among BTS and Blackpink.
