While talking to Dainik Bhaskar, Shubhangi told that she gave more than 60 auditions, many times she was turned away without even taking the audition. Sometimes she was said to be “too tall”, sometimes she “didn’t fit”. She returned home crying many times, but did not give up her dream of acting. Anupam Kher’s film ‘Tanvi The Great’ changed his life. Question: First of all, how do you look at the success of ‘Tanvi The Great’ and the continuous awards it is receiving? Answer: This entire journey has been very special for me. When people like your work and the industry honors you through awards, then it feels like you are on the right path. I also received honors at Australia International Film Festival, Zee Cine Awards, Iconic Gold Awards and recently at Indore International Film Festival. The happiest thing is that the entire team is getting so much love. Question: Today you are getting so many awards, but was it decided since childhood that you have to go into acting? Answer: Yes, it was there somewhere since childhood. Sometimes I used to pretend to be a doctor in front of the mirror, sometimes a teacher. While watching TV, it seemed that actors live every kind of life. Since then I had in my mind that I also have to do the same. She used to bunk school and go for auditions. Didn’t understand anything, but was very fond of standing in front of the camera. Question: But it is not easy to dream of acting in a middle class family, what was the reaction of the family? Answer: Mom was very scared. She used to say that this industry is not easy. We come from a middle class family, so they felt that dreams should be within limits. But I always told him that I have to try my best once. If it doesn’t happen, at least I won’t regret that I didn’t try. Question: Perhaps because of that struggle, childhood also had a lot of ups and downs? Answer: Absolutely. I changed five-six schools. Sometimes the house changed, sometimes the circumstances changed. I also stayed in boarding school for a year because my mother was working. Due to living in rented houses, there was frequent shifting. It seemed difficult at that time, but now it seems that those things made me stronger. Question: Is this the reason you started working at a very young age? Answer: Yes. I started working at the age of 16. Used to do internship along with college. Worked in office work in Bombay Talkies. I had to bear my own expenses. Later she also did modeling and other small jobs. At that time the only feeling was that something had to be done. Question: During this period you also studied mass media. Had it been decided by then that you would go into the creative field only? Answer: Yes, absolutely. I chose to study Mass Media and Advertising because I knew I wanted to work in the creative industry. Along with studies, modeling also started. Question: Talking about modeling, my first big break was with Hrithik Roshan. How special was that experience? Answer: Very special. My first big modeling assignment was with Hrithik Roshan sir. It was a shoot for his brand HRX. I was so starstruck that I forgot the dialogues after seeing him in front of the camera. He is my favorite actor, so that day is still memorable. Question: After modeling, did you feel that now acting should be learned professionally? Answer: Yes. I felt that just dreaming will not suffice, we will also have to learn. So I did a diploma in Anupam Kher sir’s acting school ‘Actor Prepares’. There he learned the nuances of camera, dance, action and acting. Question: After learning acting, did the struggle become a little easier or did you still get rejections? Answer: No, I got rejections even then. I must have given more than 60-70 auditions. Many times, without even auditioning, it was said, “You are too tall” or “You don’t fit.” I have returned home crying many times. The most difficult thing was waiting when the chance would finally come. Question: After so many rejections, did you ever feel that you should leave now? Answer: Yes, there came a time when I stopped giving auditions for two-three months. I was very tired. But then I controlled myself because acting gives me happiness. I didn’t want it to remain just a struggle. Question: Then at that time came the audition of ‘Tanvi the Great’? Answer: Yes. Different types of auditions were sent to me. Sometimes it was said to think like a blind person, sometimes a different emotional situation was given. They wanted to see my different interpretation. I used to try to send auditions first so that people would take notice. Question: How long did the audition process for the film take? Answer: For about six months. During that time I had to leave other projects because the team wanted a completely fresh face in the film. I was told that four-five girls were shortlisted, so every audition was very important for me. Question: When the film was finally finalized, what was the first reaction? Answer: When Anupam sir and team said “You are doing it”, I could not believe it. I remained silent because hope had been dashed many times before. Even after going home, mom told me not to tell anyone until the shoot starts. Question: What was the first thing you started working on after getting the film? Answer: First of all on understanding the character. I met the real Tanvi. Spent 15 days with him. Understand his family, his behavior and his world. Answer: Was very disciplined. If I laughed in between the shots, he would immediately say – “Shubhangi, don’t come out of character.” But he was also very supportive. If I did a good scene, he was the happiest. Question: How nerve-wracking was the first shooting day? Answer: Very much. The days of the shoot were getting closer and I was losing sleep. I just wanted not to disappoint anyone. The first scene was the same as the first scene of the film. Question: What was the most difficult part during the shooting? Answer: Shooting different emotions in a single day. Sometimes an emotional scene, then immediately a funny scene. The most difficult thing was to continuously capture the emotions of the character. I was nervous, but Boman Irani sir went and sat comfortably. Then I also gathered courage and did the scene. After that I started saying that I want to do action films. Question: How was the experience of working with such big actors in your first film? Answer: I always used to say that I am a lion among lions. I never thought in my childhood that such a day would come. Question: What do you feel today when you remember the old audition days? Answer: Today, when I see Aram Nagar and the old audition office, I remember how many times I have come out crying. But now it seems it was all worth it.
