Jan Nayakan Movie Review: Politics dominates Vijay’s last film, the three-hour journey becomes a tiring spectacle.

Being Vijay’s last film, ‘Jana Nayakan’ was not just a release but an emotional occasion for crores of fans. It was expected that this film would give a memorable farewell to his long cinematic journey. But director H. Vinoth makes it more of a political message than a story and a medium to shine the star’s image. The result is that at times the film leaves entertainment and starts looking like an election speech. Vijay’s presence certainly garners applause, but the weak script and excessive length reduce the impact of the film. The length of the film is 3 hours 3 minutes. Dainik Bhaskar gave the film 2 out of 5 stars. How is the story of the film? The story is about Vetri (Vijay), who despite being in jail, dominates everyone. The honest jailer Srikanth (Gautham Vasudev Menon) recognizes his humanity, but after an accident, he hands over the responsibility of his daughter Viji (Mamita Baiju) to Vetri. Vetri sets out to fulfill his dream of making him an officer in the army. On the other hand, international criminal John Himmler (Bobby Deol) is plotting to spread violence and anarchy in the country. Journalist Kayal (Pooja Hegde) also becomes a part of this story. The story seems emotional in the beginning, but soon it starts carrying the burden of many issues like women empowerment, terrorism, politics, corruption and power struggle. Due to this the original story gets left behind. The film completely falls apart after the interval and it seems like every other scene is written just to make Vijay’s image bigger. How is the acting of the star cast? Vijay is seen with full confidence as always. His charisma remains intact in entry, action, dialogue and screen presence. But when the script is weak then even his stardom cannot take the film very far. Mamita Baiju impresses the most and leaves her mark in the emotional scenes. Bobby Deol’s villain, as dangerous as he looks on paper, does not leave that much impact on screen. Pooja Hegde has got very little to do. Artists like Prakash Raj, Nassar, Priyamani and Gautam Vasudev Menon are also left in limited roles. How is the direction and technical side? H. Vinoth tried to give political color to a strong emotional story, but this trick proves to be the weakest. The script wanders frequently and many scenes pass by without any impact. The film could have easily been shortened by half an hour. The special effects don’t seem to be at big screen level in many places. The extreme part is longer and more tedious than necessary. The cinematography is good and leaves some visual impact, but the weak writing and loose editing overshadows the technical effort. How is the music? Anirudh Ravichander’s music is the strongest link of the film. The songs are already popular and the background music adds life to many of the scenes. Especially Vijay’s entry and action scenes become more impressive because of the music. Final Verdict, watch or not? ‘Jana Nayakan’ fails in its biggest objective. It neither becomes a completely powerful political drama nor is it able to give a memorable farewell to Vijay. For Vijay fans, there are many moments worth applauding, but as an audience the film is a disappointment. The weak story, fragmented screenplay and unnecessary length make it ordinary. Vijay’s farewell deserved a much stronger and more memorable film than this.
