According to government sources, this decision was taken citing security concerns and obligations set under the Information Technology (IT) Rules, 2021. According to a government official, the filmmakers had applied for certification from CBFC in 2022 with the title ‘Punjab 95’. However, 127 cuts suggested by the Censor Board were not accepted, following which the film’s release was put on hold. “The filmmakers did not implement the cuts suggested by the censor board and later changed the name of the film to quietly release it on OTT. Since OTT does not fall under the jurisdiction of the CBFC, ZEE5 was asked to remove the film when the matter came to the notice of the government,” the official said. Let us tell you that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) does not regulate the content released on the OTT platform. It is governed under Part-3 of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap compared the film with Iranian filmmakers.
