The teaser of Ajay Devgan’s film ‘Chauhan’ came into controversy. An organization named Kshatriya Parishad said that historical heritage should not be made a medium for communal mobilization. The organization appealed to film producers not to use the name Rajput to incite caste and communal sentiments. The teaser of the film was released on 25 June. There is a dialogue in the voice of Ajay Devgan, “Tell the Pathans, Chauhan has come.” Some people on social media called it an attempt to increase religious division. The film also received criticism for its portrayal of the Kashmir conflict and for showing that pellet guns cause less harm. The Kshatriya Parishad said in its statement that the complexity of history should be respected and Rajput heritage should not be used for political or ideological purposes. The organization said that the use of ‘Chauhan’ surname for contemporary communal politics cannot be accepted. The organization said that when the voice of the Rajput community is less represented than ever in mainstream media and public discourse, it is irresponsible and disrespectful to use a Rajput surname solely to incite controversy, caste and communal sentiments or create a political atmosphere. The organization also gave examples from history and said that Indian history cannot be seen from a communal perspective. The statement said that on several occasions Rajputs and Pathans fought alongside each other. This includes Mahmud Lodi under the leadership of Maharana Sanga in the battle of Khanwa, Hakim Khan Sur in the army of Maharana Pratap in Haldighati, Farid Khan (later Sher Shah Suri)’s association with Raja Raisal Shekhawat and Maharaja Vikramaditya Tomar fighting with the Lodi army in the first battle of Panipat. The organization said these incidents show that medieval political alliances were based on governance, loyalty and military strategy, rather than the communal attitudes imposed today. The teaser of the film was both praised and criticized on social media. Actress Swara Bhaskar, while sharing a news related to the youngest victim of pellet gun in Kashmir, wrote that pellet gun does not cause less harm, but it is a serious human rights violation. He also said that mainstream Kashmiris are not Pathans and wrote ‘Vivek Agnihotri-Fication of Bollywood’ along with the post. Made under the banner of Jio Studios and Color Yellow Productions, this film starring Jyoti Deshpande, Aanand L Rai and Himanshu Sharma will be released on October 1.
