The family had opposed the web series made on the life of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.

The Central Government has banned the web series ‘Lawrence of Punjab’ based on the life of gangster Lawrence and the events related to it. Regarding this, Punjab Police had written a letter to the Center demanding a stop citing the deteriorating environment of the state.

.

On the other hand, Lawrence’s family also opposed this series. Lawrence Bishnoi’s family had raised questions on the content of this series, its production process and the timing of its release.

Neither permission has been taken from the family nor from the government to make a web series. Lawrence’s uncle Ramesh says that strict action should be taken against the producer of the film in this matter.

Let us tell you that Lawrence Gang has taken responsibility for the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala in the year 2022, then the murder of Karni Sena leader Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi in 2023, the murder of NCP MLA Baba Siddiqui and firing outside Salman Khan’s house.

Lawrence’s uncle Ramesh Bishnoi opposed the web series.

Why did Lawrence’s family object to the web series?

  • Did not take permission from family: Lawrence’s uncle Ramesh says that the series director and production team did not contact the family before starting this project nor did they take any approval from them. He raised the question whether any permission was taken from the government to make a documentary based on sensitive legal matters?
  • The big gangster is shown: Ramesh Bishnoi says that the way Lawrence has been portrayed on screen as a ‘big gangster’ and the mastermind of the ‘ransom syndicate’ in this web series, is completely one-sided and misleading.
  • This will create a document: Ramesh Bishnoi says that whatever is shown in the documentary will become a document. In the argument given by the family, it has been said that through such series, a one-sided narrative is being set in the society, which can also affect the court proceedings in future.
  • Waiting for the court’s decision: Argued that until the final verdict of the court comes in the cases pending against a person, the media or the film industry has no right to glorify or portray him as a ‘criminal’ or a ‘gangster’. The family alleged that all his cases are still going on in the courts.
  • Appealed to the High Court and the government: The family had appealed to the Punjab and Haryana High Court and the government and demanded a ban on this web series, on which the Center took the decision today. He has demanded from the Central and State Governments that a strict censorship and verification process should be implemented before releasing such sensitive content on OTT platforms.

  • Letter to DGP: Raja Vading had written a letter to the Director General of Police (DGP) of Punjab expressing concern over the possible side effects of this series. He had demanded that the state police should investigate the impact of its telecast on law and order.
  • Complaint given to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting: He had also sent a formal complaint in this regard to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of the Central Government, requesting to remove the objectionable parts of the series or ban it completely.
  • Strategy to raise in assembly: Vading has clarified that he will raise this issue in the upcoming session of Punjab Assembly. They say that they will put pressure on the government to ban any film or series that tarnishes the image of the state in Punjab.
  • Congress is raising the issue prominently: Raja Vading says that Lawrence murdered Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala. In such a situation, he should not be glorified in Punjab. He said that Congress will raise this issue prominently in the entire state.
