Asha Bhosle, the queen of music, is no more: In poverty, she used to secretly go to school with her sister Lata, sometimes she was thrown out of the recording studio.

Melody queen Asha Bhosle passed away today at the age of 92. The singer was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on Saturday night due to chest infection. Asha Bhosle was a part of Hindi cinema for the last 70 years. He sang a record 12 thousand songs in many languages. It is difficult to imagine Hindi cinema without her, although there was a time when Asha Bhosle was thrown out of the recording studio on the grounds that her voice was bad. Today, Asha Bhosle, the owner of many hotels around the world, spent her childhood in poverty. She was so poor that she used to go to school secretly with her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar, so that her father did not have to pay the fees. Asha Bhosle was born on 8 September 1933 in Sangli, British India. His father, Pandit Dinanath Mangeshkar, was a theater artist. There was such a situation of poverty in the house that when elder sister Lata Mangeshkar was admitted to school, she started taking Asha to school secretly. She used to make Asha sit with her, hiding from the master. It had been only two days since I went to school that one day Masterji caught me stealing. He threw both of them out of the classroom and said that only one child can come to school for one fee. Both returned home. The next day Lata decided that she would teach her younger sister. After talking to his father, he got his name removed from the school and got his sister Asha admitted in his place. Asha was just 9 years old when her father Dinanath Mangeshkar passed away. In such a situation, Lata struggled and entered Hindi cinema and raised her sister. The family first settled in Pune and then in Mumbai. Here Asha Bhosle started singing at the age of just 10. He got his first break with the song Chala Chala Naav Bala from the Marathi film Majha Bal (1943). Asha was just 15 years old when she got the opportunity to sing Sawan Aaya from the Hindi film Chunariya. During that period, singers like Noor Jahan, Shamshad Begum had a hold in the industry. Lata Mangeshkar was also slowly making her mark, but Asha was nowhere in this list. She got opportunities only when filmmakers were either unable to pay the fees of big singers or other singers refused. When she went to record a song, she was thrown out of the studio by taunting her voice. Asha Bhosle was once thrown out of the recording studio with Kishore Kumar on the grounds that she had a bad voice. It is about 1947. Asha had gone to the famous studios with Kishore Kumar to record a song for the Raj Kapoor and Nargis starrer film ‘Jaan Pehchan’. The music director of this film was Khemchand Prakash. At that time there were no special facilities in the studio, there was only one mike and the singers had to sing standing in front of it. As soon as Asha and Kishore Da started singing, recordist Robin Chatterjee softly said to music director Khemchandra in Bengali – The voices of these two are not sounding good in the mic, bring another singer. Kishore da standing nearby understood this and told Asha that something was wrong here. His song was also stopped and after some time he was asked to leave from there. It was 2 o’clock in the night. Both of them were devastated by this insult and after leaving there they sat near Mahalaxmi station and started discussing where they had gone wrong. Years later, Kishore Kumar took revenge for his and Asha’s insult. By 1957, Asha Bhosle had made a name for herself in Hindi cinema. His song Ude Jab Jab Zulfen Teri was a huge hit. Kishore Kumar had also made his mark. After getting success, one day he got a chance to record again in the same studio. Robin Chatterjee was also present there, who had got him and Asha thrown out of the studio years ago. Asha Tai could not say anything due to hesitation, but Kishore Kumar took advantage of the opportunity and said to the recordist – Why, you had said that we cannot sing. You see where we are now. Asha Bhosle, who started singing at the age of 10, fell in love with her secretary Ganpat Rao Bhosle at the age of just 16. Ganpat Rao was 15 years older than him. She knew that her family would never approve of this relationship, so she ran away from home at the age of 16 and married Ganpat Rao. This decision brought more troubles than happiness for him. After marriage, she did not get good treatment from her husband and in-laws. Time passed, but bitterness in the relationship continued to increase. Asha had 3 children from her marriage. After a few years, this relationship, filled with suspicion and tension, finally died down. Ganpatrao threw him out of the house. At that time Asha was with two children and was about to become the mother of the third child. Under compulsion he had to return to his maternal home. Both separated in the year 1960. Daughter committed suicide by shooting, son died of cancer. Asha Bhosle and Ganpat Rao had three children. His elder son Hemant Bhosle initially worked as a pilot, but later entered the world of music. He also gave some memorable songs, although his singing career did not last long. He died due to cancer in 2015. Asha’s daughter Varsha Bhosale was a well-known columnist. After divorcing her husband, she committed suicide by shooting herself at the age of 55. Her youngest son Anand Bhosle studied business and film direction and today manages his mother’s career. RD Burman’s mother had said that if you want to marry Asha, you will have to pass through a dead body. After getting divorced from Ganpat Rao, RD Burman came as a companion in Asha Bhosle’s life. The two met in 1966, when they were working together in Teesri Manzil. Both of them called out ‘O Haseena Zulfon Wali’, and ‘O Mere Sona Re Sona Re’. RD Burman wanted to do something different from the legacy of his father SD Burman. Bringing the trend of jazz and cabaret, he got the support of Asha Bhosle’s voice. Both of them drank, now you come…, dam maaro dam…. Like the songs she composed, Asha Bhosle came to be known as Cabaret Queen. The professional relationship soon led to growing closeness. Pancham Da was 6 years younger than Asha and was divorced from his first wife Rita in 1971. His marriage was in controversy. Due to increasing domestic disputes, he left home and started living in a hotel. After 9 years, when he decided to marry Asha, the family turned against him. The mother flatly refused. RD Burman’s mother was so upset with their relationship that she clearly said that as long as he was alive, both of them could not get married and if they wanted to get married, then Asha would have to be brought into the house over her mother’s dead body. Hearing this, RD Burman left from there without saying anything. Both wanted to get married, however, this was not possible due to their mother’s displeasure. After a few years, RD Burman’s mother became very ill and she stopped recognizing anyone, after which RD Burman and Asha got married in 1980. RD Burman died in 1994 after just 14 years of marriage, and Asha was once again alone. Before RD’s demise, his financial condition was not good due to which Asha and he used to live separately.
