Parents wanted to become a doctor
Kangana was born on 23 March 1986 in a Rajput family in Bhambla (now Surajpur) in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh. Her mother Asha Ranaut is a school teacher, while her father Amardeep Ranaut is a businessman. Kangana, who grew up in a joint family, was stubborn and rebellious since childhood and raised questions on discrimination against girls in the society.

Kangana’s parents wanted her to become a doctor and she also started her medical studies at DAV School, Chandigarh. However, he left studies due to failure in Chemistry test in 12th and interest in modelling/acting.
Survived on pickles and bread also
At the age of just 16, Kangana came to Delhi in search of making her own identity. Here she started with modeling, then turned to acting and learned acting under the guidance of director Arvind Gaur in Asmita Theater Group and participated in plays. Then on the advice of Arvind Gaur, Kangana reached Mumbai to try her luck in films. After reaching Mumbai, Kangana many times had to spend her days eating only bread and pickles.
Chitrangada first got the role in ‘Gangster’
In the year 2006, Kangana entered Bollywood with the film Gangster. Her acting in this film was highly appreciated and she received the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.
Regarding getting her first film Gangster, Kangana had told in the TV show ‘Aap Ki Adalat’ that one day she had gone to audition for a coffee ad, when she saw that some girls were going to Mahesh Bhatt’s office to audition for the film Gangster. After which Kangana also went to give audition.
After the audition, the makers of the film called her and praised Kangana, but said that she was too young for this role, because the character was that of a mother of a child. After this, actress Chitrangada Singh was selected for this role.
Kangana played the lead role of a woman named Simran in the film Gangster.
But fate had something else in store. Just a week before the shooting, Chitrangada suddenly stopped picking up the calls of the makers due to some personal reasons. After this Kangana got a call and was asked whether she had a passport? Kangana did not have a passport, but she was told to get one in a week, so she could get the film.
After this, Kangana got her passport made in just 2 days with the help of her father and thus she got this film.
Received the first National Award for Fashion
After Gangster, Kangana strengthened her identity by playing emotional and difficult characters in films like Woh Lamhe and Life in a Metro. The 2008 film Fashion proved to be the turning point of her career, for which she received her first National Award for Best Supporting Actress.
After this, there were ups and downs in Kangana’s career between 2009 and 2012. In 2009, she played the role of a model in the film Raaz: The Mystery Continues, which was a hit, but she started getting similar roles. The film Vaada Raha released in the same year and starring Niranjan did not perform well.
In 2010, he had a small role in the film Kites. However, his work in the film Once Upon a Time in Mumbai was praised. Later films Knock Out and No Problem could not take his career much further.
But then the 2011 film Tanu Weds Manu changed his image and the audience also liked his comic style.

After the superhit film Krrish 3 in 2013, Kangana took her career to new heights with Queen in 2014. After this, she won her second consecutive National Award by playing a double role in Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015).

Apart from films, Kangana Ranaut has been in news due to her statements and controversies. He had made many serious allegations of physical, mental and sexual abuse against Bollywood actor Aditya Pancholi.
The actress had alleged in the TV show ‘Aap Ki Adalat’ in 2017 that Aditya Pancholi assaulted her and kept her locked in the house for a long time. Kangana had told that she was living in an atmosphere of constant fear and often tried to run away from there.
Referring to an incident, he had said that Pancholi had made a duplicate key of his house and used to come there without permission. Once the situation became so bad that Kangana had to run away by jumping from the first floor to save her life. She told that she ran on the road barefoot and somehow escaped from there by taking a rickshaw, but during this time she also got injured.
Kangana and Aditya Pancholi’s relationship lasted for about four years (between 2004-2008).
Kangana had also said that even after running away, she was not left behind. She told that the next morning when the bell of her house rang and she looked through the keyhole of the door, Aditya Pancholi was standing in front, from whom she had escaped.
She had further told that once during the shooting, she received threatening phone calls and when she left from there, her car was followed. Even an attempt was made to hit his rickshaw. Film director Anurag Basu and his wife helped him in this difficult time. Kangana had told that she had kept him hidden in her office for about 15 days.
Bandits came to gun point in Chambal
A dangerous incident took place during the shooting of Kangana Ranaut’s film Revolver Rani in 2013, when the actress came at the gunpoint of dacoits. This incident happened in Chambal area of Madhya Pradesh, which was once a stronghold of dacoits. After finishing the shooting, Kangana was returning to Gwalior with her director Sai Kabir and the team. There were 4-5 cars and a police van in his convoy.
On the way, 12-15 armed men suddenly stopped his convoy. These people had guns and knives. According to the Times of India report, they wanted to get photographed with Kangana and were not allowing the car to move forward.
However, director Sai Kabir spoke to him sensibly and calmed the matter down. Kangana had refused to get photographed with him, but the matter was resolved through talks. The team was safely taken to Gwalior under security.
In the 2014 film ‘Revolver Rani’, Kangana played the role of a rebel and gun-wielding politician named Alka Singh.
I froze during my first kiss
In the year 2019, Kangana talked about her first boyfriend in India Today Conclave. She was in Chandigarh at that time. One of her friends went on a date and she got into a relationship with her date’s friend. He was a Punjabi boy.
Kangana told that he was 28 years old and she herself was 16-17 years old. Looking at them he said, “You are a child.” She thought she was new to this matter. This broke his heart.
She further added that she personally feels that he is an obsessive lover. She would message him, “Give me a chance, I will become wise.”
While talking about her first kiss, Kangana had said that she could not kiss him, so she practiced kissing on her palm. Their first kiss was not special at all, but a little awkward. Her mouth was frozen and she could not even move. The boy had told him, “Move your mouth a little.”

Mahesh Bhatt accused of throwing slippers
At the same time, after the death of Sushant Singh Rajput in 2020, Kangana had alleged that outsiders are deliberately sidelined in the film industry and only star kids are promoted.
During this time, he also had an argument with Pooja Bhatt, daughter of Mahesh Bhatt, who launched him. This debate started when Pooja had said on social media that her company Vishesh Films had launched Kangana with the film Gangster. On this, Kangana retorted and said that she was chosen by director Anurag Basu and not by Mahesh Bhatt. Apart from this, it was also alleged by the actress that many times in the industry, outside artists are not paid properly and it is presented as a favor.
Kangana had also accused Mahesh Bhatt of misbehaving with her during the screening of the film Woh Lamhe, and even threw slippers at her and insulted her.
Controversy with Hrithik Roshan The dispute between Kangana and Hrithik started in the year 2016 when Kangana called him her ‘silly ex’ in an interview. After this both sent legal notices to each other. Kangana claimed that they were in a relationship, while Hrithik completely denied it.
Kangana and Hrithik have worked in the films ‘Kites’ and ‘Krrish 3’.
Kangana Ranaut-Javed Akhtar controversy There was a dispute between actress Kangana Ranaut and lyricist Javed Akhtar for a long time. The case started in July 2020, when Kangana had alleged in a TV interview that in 2016, Javed Akhtar had called her to his home and advised her to apologize to the Roshan family and warned of serious consequences if she did not do so.
Rejecting these allegations, Javed Akhtar filed a defamation case against Kangana in November 2020. Kangana did not appear in the court several times during the hearing, due to which bailable warrants were also issued against her.
Finally, on 28 February 2025, a settlement was reached between the two parties in the Mumbai court. Kangana apologized unconditionally in writing and termed her statements as a misunderstanding. After this, Javed Akhtar withdrew the case, which ended the controversy.
Kangana will be seen in the film Bharat Bhagya Vidhaata Kangana Ranaut has started shooting for the film Bharat Bhagya Vidhaata in January 2026 and it is likely to release by the end of 2026. The film is based on a true incident that took place at Cama and Albless Hospital during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks of 2008. Kangana is playing the role of a staff nurse in the film.
