Director Padmakumar Narasimhamurthy’s ‘Max, Min & Myuuzaki’ presents a slow-paced but heart-warming story based on family, relationships, mental health and emotional healing. The film reflects the warmth and love of cats of Hayao Miyazaki’s films. Its length is 2 hours 18 minutes. Dainik Bhaskar has given the film a 3 out of 5 star rating. How is the story of the film? The film starts with the breakup of Max (Siddharth Menon) and his girlfriend Min (Medha Shankar). Hayao Miyazaki’s films used to connect both of them, but now their relationship has ended. Now the only bond left between them is their pet cat Myuuzaki. Min leaves the cat with Max for a while. Max is not ready to keep him due to his allergy to animal hair. Gradually this cat again becomes the reason for emotional connection in both of their lives. This is not just a breakup story. Max is trying to recover from the shock of his mother Vasudha’s death from cancer. On the other hand, father Ramesh is struggling with loneliness, guilt and internal conflict after his wife’s departure. The story connects the emotional entanglements of three generations. Max’s grandfather Sridhar Mahadevan looks at life in the nursing home from a new perspective. Characters like Jennifer Sequeira and Carol show that no matter what age, people always need belonging and love. The film weaves many social issues like breakup of relationships, growing distance between parents and children, mental health, therapy, loneliness, Islamophobia, gender roles and family responsibilities into the story without any speech. However, due to the many sub-plots, the film feels scattered at some places and longer than necessary. How is the acting of the star cast? Siddharth Menon has portrayed the emotions of a broken man honestly in the character of Max. He effectively brings on screen the turmoil after his mother’s death and the end of his relationship. Medha Shankar has given a restrained performance in the role of Min. Despite not having very dramatic scenes, she keeps the character comfortable. The strongest performance of the film is of Adil Hussain. As Ramesh Mahadevan, he has portrayed the struggle of guilt, loneliness and self-acceptance effectively. Especially the therapy scenes and his emotional dialogue with his son Max are remembered. Nassar plays the character of Sridhar Mahadevan. He leaves an impact even in limited screen time. His presence adds experience and emotional depth to the film. Nafisa Ali brings dignity and sensitivity as Jennifer Sequeira. Vidatri impresses with her spontaneity and life-weary but positive energy as Bandi Carroll. Mandira Bedi gives balance to the story in the character of Dhara. Although her role is small, she leaves an impact. How is the direction and technical side? Director Padmakumar Narasimhamurthy has presented emotional themes sensitively. The biggest strength of the film is its characters, who get adequate time. However, because of this, the film feels overextended at many places. The cinematography is simple but effective. The camera focuses on the characters’ emotions. The production design is strong. Max’s modern apartment, Studio Ghibli posters, and Carol’s bohemian home reflect the characters’ mental worlds. The costume design suits the characters’ personalities and the small visual details make the film feel real. How is the music? The background score of the film is serene and emotional. The music enhances the mood of the story rather than overpowering it. There is no excessive noise or melodrama anywhere. However, no song is remembered for long. Weaknesses of the film The biggest weakness of the film is its long duration of 2 hours and 18 minutes. Many scenes and sub-plots could have been shortened. At some places the emotional dialogues seem long and the pace of the film slows down. The acting of some actors does not leave the full impact as per the vision of the director. Covering so many serious topics at once, the story feels fragmented in some parts. Final Verdict: To watch or not? If you like fast paced masala films then ‘Max, Min & Myuuzaki’ may seem slow. But if you like sensitive stories based on relationships, family, mental health and emotional healing, then you may like this film. This film gives the experience of understanding and feeling human emotions more than entertainment. Its long length is its weakness, but the honest story and Adil Hussain’s strong acting make it worth a watch.
