At that time Sonu was 18 years old. After coming to Mumbai, he did not get any work initially. Sonu and his father visited the houses of many music composers, but they were rejected saying that there was too much variety in their voice and it had to be controlled. Similarly, he did not get any work for four years. During this time, Sonu used to sing Mohammed Rafi’s songs on stage to run the house. He also tried at Sudeep Recording Studio, but he was not allowed to record the song there, due to which he cried a lot. Meeting with T-Series owner Gulshan Kumar, Chamki Kismat, T-Series owner Gulshan Kumar liked Sonu’s songs very much. In 1992 he called Sonu to the studio. At that time T-Series had launched an album Rafi Ki Yaadein, in which Sonu Nigam was given a chance to sing. Sonu happily accepted this offer. In this album he sang the songs of Mohammad Rafi in his own voice. He also recorded many bhajans. Through this he gradually started getting recognition. He also worked for many commercial ads. His financial condition had also started getting better than before. After this, he also called his mother and two sisters from Delhi to Mumbai. Sonu Nigam recorded his first song for the film Janam, but the film was never released. The song of the film Bewafa Sanam became a hit, got recognition. In 1995, Gulshan Kumar once again gave Sonu a chance to sing in the film Bewafa Sanam. In this film, he sang the song ‘Accha Sila Diya Tune Mere Pyar Ka’, which became a huge hit and gave him a new identity. In the same year, he started working as a host in Zee TV’s musical reality show Sa Re Ga Ma. This show became very popular and Sonu got recognition in every household. In 1997, she sang the song ‘Sandesh Aate Hain’ with Roop Kumar Rathod in the film Border. This song was full of patriotic feelings and proved to be a superhit. Sonu also received the ‘Best Playback Singer’ award for this song. Although he refused to accept this award, because Roop Kumar Rathod also had an important role in this song, but the honor was given only to Sonu.
