Movie Review – Governor: The story of saving the country from bankruptcy, Manoj Bajpayee made even a difficult subject interesting

Today’s India is counted among the largest economies of the world, but there was a time when the country did not even have money left to import essential goods. Foreign exchange reserves were depleting rapidly and the country was standing on the verge of economic crisis. ‘Governor’ brings the story of that period. This film shows a battle not of guns, bombs and action, but of files, meetings and decisions. The surprising thing is that despite being such a serious subject, the film succeeds in keeping the audience engaged at many places. The story of the film is based on the economic crisis of 1990-91 when India reached the stage of bankruptcy. At such a time, Reserve Bank of India Governor A. Ramanan gets the responsibility of handling the economic system of the country. On one hand there is rising inflation, decreasing foreign exchange reserves and international pressure, and on the other hand there is political instability. In such a situation, Ramanan and his team try to take such decisions which can take the country out of the economic crisis. A large part of the story is based on this conflict and strategy. The good thing about the film is that it doesn’t feel like a history book. An attempt has also been made to explain complex economic issues in a simple manner. Manoj Bajpayee acting in the film is the life of the entire film. Almost every scene rests on his shoulders and he fulfills this responsibility very well. He conveys the pressure, worries and responsibilities of such a person to the audience without making much noise. Ada Sharma looks good in the role of a journalist. Although her part does not have very impressive scenes, she works to take the story forward. Actress Madhu Shah has done a good job in her limited screen time, while the supporting cast also looks good in their respective roles. The biggest work of director Chinmay D. Mandlekar in the film is that he has made a difficult subject like economy understandable. The film sometimes comes close to becoming a documentary, but the direction saves it from being boring. However, at some places the film feels like offering overly simple solutions. The difficulties behind certain incidents and decisions could have been shown in more detail. Technical aspects of the film: The production design of the film reflects the atmosphere of that era well. The office, government meetings and the atmosphere of that time seem real. The cinematography is simple, but serves the purpose of the story. Editing is also good, although the film seems a little long in some parts. Weaknesses in the film: The biggest weakness of the film is its pace. The story seems to be at a standstill in some scenes. The tension that should have been felt regarding economic decisions has not been shown fully. Additionally, some viewers may feel that the film leaves out too many difficult political aspects. Had these areas been explored in more detail, the story would have been stronger. Music in Film Music in film is not a main part of the story. Background music helps in creating atmosphere and has been used properly. This is its biggest strength. Why watch the movie? ‘Governor’ is one of those films which not only entertains but also gives information. This film tells that the future of the country is decided not only by the battles fought on the border, but also by the decisions taken in closed rooms. Manoj Bajpayee’s strong acting and a less talked about but important subject makes it worth watching. While its slow pace and some superficial elements keep it from taking it to great heights, it’s still an honest and interesting effort.
