Veteran Tamil director Bharathiraja died in Chennai on Wednesday at the age of 84. According to news agency ANI, the reason for his demise was age-related health problems. Bharathiraja was honored with six National Film Awards, four South Filmfare Awards, six Tamil Nadu State Film Awards and one Nandi Award. The Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri in 2004 for his contribution to Indian cinema. Bharathiraja, who directed more than 40 films, started as a director in 1977 with the film ’16 Vayathinile’. After this, he directed more than 40 films in a career spanning more than four decades. He also received the title of ‘Iykkunnar Imayam’ for his contribution to Tamil cinema. His major films include ‘Kizhakke Pogum Rail’, ‘Sigappu Rojakkal’, ‘Alaigal Oivathillai’, ‘Kaadhal Oviyam’ and ‘Mudhal Mariyathai’. Bharathiraja has also directed some Hindi (Bollywood) films in his career like ‘Solva Sawan’ (1979), ‘Red Rose’ (1980) and ‘Savere Wali Gaadi’ (1986). Let us tell you that Rajesh Khanna and Poonam Dhillon played the lead roles in the film ‘Red Rose’. His last release as a director was ‘Meendam Oru Mariathai’, which was released in the year 2020. Bharathiraja had also acted in many films. Apart from direction, Bharathiraja also acted. He was seen in the film ‘Thudarum’. His unreleased film ‘Pulwar’ will be his last film as an actor. In his acting career, he also worked in films like ‘Ayudha Ezhuthu’, ‘Pandyanadu’, ‘Eeswaran’, ‘Thiruchithrambalam’ and ‘Maharaja’. Actress Khushboo Sundar expressed grief on social media and said that Bharathiraja’s demise is a big loss for Tamil cinema. He described him as one of the most respected directors of Indian cinema. Khushboo said that Bharathiraja’s films are like a school of film production and will remain an inspiration for the coming generations. While sharing a personal memory, he said that the director often talked about making a film with him, which now remained incomplete.
