Ranveer Singh’s ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’ i.e. Dhurandhar 2 is back on a big scale after the blockbuster success of the first part. This time the film is not just a story of gang war or revenge, but presents a bigger narrative connecting many major events of the country from demonetisation. As high as the expectations were, the film fulfills them at many places and misses them a bit at some places. The story of the film begins with the past of Jaskirat Singh Rangi, who enters the world of crime after the injustice done to his family. After coming out of jail, he gets a chance to work for India and goes on an undercover mission in Pakistan as Hamza Ali Mazari. After the first part, the story now revolves around Lyari’s power and gang war. Capturing the throne vacated after the death of Rehman Dacoit, eliminating the enemies and reaching one’s real mission is the core of the film. This time, references to issues like demonetization, Atiq Ahmed and political links from India and abroad have been added to the story. The biggest suspense is of “Bade Saheb”, around which the entire story revolves. However, as big as this revelation was made, it does not leave that much impact. The first half of the film seems a bit slow and drawn out, but after the interval the story picks up and leaves an impact by the time it reaches the climax. Ranveer Singh acting in the film is the life of the entire film. He has shown different body language and attitude in both the characters of Jaskirat and Hamza. Action, anger and emotion, he is everywhere on the screen. Rakesh Bedi is a surprise package this time too. R. Whenever Madhavan comes on screen, he strengthens the film. Sanjay Dutt’s presence is good, but limited. Arjun Rampal’s character did not become that dangerous this time. Sara Arjun has got less screen time, but she leaves an impact in her part. His character could have got more depth. In the direction and technical aspects of the film, Aditya Dhar has further increased the scale of the film. The effort put into research and detailing is visible, especially when the film touches on real events. But this very effort makes the film heavy and a bit documentary-like at many places. The tight story of the first part loosens up a bit here. Many scenes seem long and some twists are predictable. However, the direction improves in the second half and the climax becomes strong. The cinematography and action sequences are fantastic. The background score is impressive especially in the climax, but the editing could have been tighter. Music of the film: Music is the weak link of the film this time. It doesn’t have the same impact as the first part. At some places, old songs have been used, while only one or two songs like ‘Aari Aari’ and ‘Jaan Se Gujarte’ remain memorable. The background score definitely succeeds in creating the atmosphere. Final Verdict on the film Dhurandhar 2 is a big and ambitious film, which tries to give a different kind of cinematic experience by combining action, politics and real events. However, its length, loose script and some incomplete characters do not allow it to be as strong as the first part. Still, Ranveer Singh’s stellar performance, strong second half and impressive climax make it a good theatrical experience. If you liked the first part, then definitely watch this film, just keep your expectations balanced.
