BLADENSBURG, Md. — A DC man is facing 36 charges for crashing into a child’s birthday party tent, killing one person and injuring 13 in Prince George’s County.
Sunday Joseph, 66, was indicted on charges including one count of grossly negligent manslaughter by motor vehicle, three counts of hit-and-run involving serious bodily injury, 11 counts of failure to return and remain at the scene of an accident involving bodily injury, and 11 counts of reckless driving.
According to prosecutors, on Oct. 18, 2025, Joseph traveled full speed in reverse from Annapolis Road into the front yard of a home on 56th Avenue in Bladensburg, where a child’s birthday party was taking place. He then reportedly got out of the car, staggered, and ran from the scene.
Ashley Hernandez Gutierrez, 31, was killed in the crash. Many of those injured were trapped after Joseph abandoned his vehicle.
The defense claims Joseph has no criminal record whatsoever and turned himself in around 8 a.m., the following morning, but the prosecution says Joseph only turned himself in after a police officer called him.
The manslaughter charge carries a potential 10-year sentence.
Hit-and-run involving serious bodily injury carries a maximum sentence of five years and a $5,000 fine.
