It might only be Wednesday, but crews in the District are making sure residents will be safe come the weekend.
WASHINGTON — The District’s Department of Public Works is preparing crews and equipment ahead of a winter storm expected to impact the region this weekend.
DPW officials say dozens of plow trucks and support vehicles are being inspected and stocked as forecasts continue to shift. The agency plans to begin treating roadways in the coming days to prepare for snow and icy conditions.
Warnique West, who has overseen winter weather operations for nearly 25 years, said preparation starts with ensuring equipment is ready and materials such as salt and brine are fully stocked. Crews are also being notified to prepare for extended shifts once the storm arrives.
“We’re making sure all of our equipment is ready, that we have all the materials and supplies we need, and that our staff is prepared to work 12-hour shifts,” West said.
West said changing storm tracks and temperatures require constant monitoring in the days leading up to an event. Factors such as snowfall rates, timing, temperatures before and during the storm, and moisture levels all influence how the department responds.
DPW plans to deploy approximately 30 to 35 crews to begin brining streets Thursday and Friday nights. Road salting operations are expected to begin Saturday, depending on weather conditions.
Despite the uncertainty, West said she remains enthusiastic about winter weather.
“Absolutely,” she said when asked about the approaching storm. “I’m the snow queen. You’ve got to be excited for snow.”
But once the snow starts falling, she’s asking residents of the District to take things slow.
“That residents of the District have patience as the crews will try to get out. We have to try to navigate our way safely,” she said.
