Investigators are still trying to figure out who may have set fire to the Greenbriar Park playground in 2024.
POTOMAC, Md. — A playground in Potomac, believed to be intentionally set on fire, has reopened nearly two years later.
The fire, ignited at around 10 p.m. on May 7, 2024, caused $1 million in damage to Greenbriar Local Park on Glen Road. It took 20 months to rebuild the playground, which Montgomery Parks Director Miti Figueredo said is “nearly identical” to the original structure.
“The fire at Greenbriar Local Park was a devastating blow,” Figueredo said. “To restore this important community amenity, we had to reallocate existing capital funds that would have gone to other playground projects.
Questions still lingered, though, for officials and authorities in Montgomery County, as fire investigators continued to search for a suspect on Wednesday.
A playground was built inside Potomac’s Greenbriar Local Park in 2016. According to Montgomery Parks, the structure is for children ages 5 to 12 and features slides and a multi-level fort.
