Sydney Sweeney‘s new erotic thriller is quietly becoming one of the biggest box office hits of her entire career. Lionsgate has announced that The Housemaid, which also stars Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar, has now passed $250 million at the global box office. Just last week, Collider reported that the film had eclipsed $200 million, and so far, it’s showing no signs of slowing down. The film also boasts a modest budget of only $35 million, meaning that it has now earned over seven times its budget. Its break-even point was only around $75 million, so it was a profit long ago.

The Housemaid is based on Freida McFadden’s novel of the same name, and the film was written by Rebecca Sonnenshine and directed by Paul Feig. In the months before release, Lionsgate screened the film for McFadden and her husband, and she shared a glowing review of the film, saying that she thinks it may be even better than the book. It’s not often that the author of a novel that inspired a film has such positive things to say about the new iteration. The Housemaid also stars Michele Morrone, who previously worked with Feig on Another Simple Favor.

Lionsgate announced a few weeks ago that it was working on a sequel to The Housemaid, but the only thing that’s known about the film at this time is that Sydney Sweeney will return, and it is loosely titled The Housemaid’s Secret. There has been no report or announcement regarding when it will begin production or when it will be released. However, with the success of The Housemaid, it can be considered one of the more anticipated films in development.

What Is Sydney Sweeney’s Highest-Grossing Movie?

The highest-grossing movie of Sydney Sweeney’s career is Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, the 2019 film from Quentin Tarantino that scored over $377 million at the global box office. The Housemaid needs another $130 million if it’s going to overtake Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, which isn’t impossible considering how well it’s performing week-to-week. Before The Housemaid, Sweeney’s second-highest-grossing movie was Anyone But You, her spicy romantic comedy starring Glen Powell that earned over $218 million globally. Sweeney’s only other movie to gross over $100 million at the box office is Madame Web, the 2024 Marvel movie that also stars Dakota Johnson.

Stay tuned to Collider for more box office updates and coverage of The Housemaid.
