
Police are asking for the public’s help to find the person or people responsible.
WASHINGTON — DC Police are investigating the District’s first homicide of 2026. Homicide detectives are still working to learn exactly what happened and are asking for the public’s help to find the person or people responsible.
Just after midnight Wednesday morning, officers were called to the 1300 block of Varnum Street Northeast for a report of a shooting. Once on scene, police found a man shot multiple times. The man was taken to the hospital for treatment, but was pronounced dead. The shooting scene is not far from Mundo Verde Bilingual Public Charter School.
The shooting investigation remains active and ongoing. Detectives were on scene early Wednesday, gathering evidence, interviewing potential witnesses, and looking for surveillance video in the area.

According to DC Police crime statistics, the shooting on Varnum Street was the District’s first homicide of the year. At this time last year, detectives had reported seven homicides.
